The Whittemore Block, overlooking Fitzwilliam Common, is known for its distinctive black & gold sign on the center porch. D. Whittemore & Sons operated a general store in the 1850's from this building, including a drive through, where wagon drivers would receive goods lowered from a pulley wheel located on the third floor.
